23-September-1993 Dear Potential Employer, My objective is a Network Admin. or Vax System Manager position. An extensive background in these areas would make me a valuable addition to your company. I've worked in both Scientific and Office Automation environments, Supporting everything from Mac's to Mainframes. I hold a security clearance and a SHARP certification. I have been involved with computers since 1972, when I wrote my first program in APL. I started working in this field in 1976 and built my first personal system in 1977. It has been an exciting ride into the future. You can't turn around today without finding things for sale that could not be made just a few years ago. Yet in the midst of change people still see their jobs as dull and boring. Recently I attended a seminar where the instructor closed with a question. She asked what people were using their computers for. There were a few half-hearted replies; spreadsheets, word processing, databases... I use computer technology at home, at the Army Reserve and at Cape Canaveral. At home it automates my house and connects me to the flood of thought on the inter-net. At the Army it provides the means to control transportation assets around the globe, and at the Cape it allows us to send probes to other parts of the galaxy on the biggest space booster in the free world. Later I realized what made my answers different from the rest. I was looking at a wide vista while they were looking into a tube. Although I am part of two very large organizations, in both cases I work in a small independent group that is able to identify problems, develop solutions and implement them. Most of the solutions are complex and involve interaction with other systems or locations, but with user feedback and clear goals we have accomplished much. The defense and aerospace industries are under tremendous pressure due to world events of the past few years. Our computer services group has been cut from 19 to 11, and we expect the remainder to be cut by 50 percent more. Our operation has changed direction completely. Conversion of hardware and software platforms are underway to allow centralized management and application development. I have decided to investigate other employment avenues. I am willing to relocate if required, but would perfer the southern half of the country. If your organization can use a solution oriented, VAX and network hardware heavy, long term employee, please let me know. Sincerely, Robert Thomson MMC Network Manager Cape Canaveral Operations Robert R. MILITARY EXPERIENCE -- Seven Years with the 143d Transportation Command (86-pres). This is a reserve unit commanded by a two-star general. This unit is one of only two TRANSCOM's in the world and is responsible for movement of material all across the globe. We often work directly with the DOD to support headline-making troop actions and are sited as an example of how a reserve unit can equal the performance of a active army unit. I am a senior Captain and have been the primary ADP Officer in this unit for the past five years. We employ numerous computer systems at various security levels, including two NOVELL networks and the World Wide Command & Control Information System. My unit and our 32 subordinate units have been leaders in the field of automation. These units were the first reservists to report personnel and attendance data electronically. The attendance data imported to the pay system generates electronic funds transfers directly to each solder's bank account. Each unit clerk maintains personnel records in a local database and forwards updates through our unit via modem to the Standard Army Personnel System (SIDPERS). This completely eliminates a long and error prone paper process. I have been intimately involved in all of these changes as well as phone system upgrades and personnel training. I hold a SECRET clearance and have received three medals in recognition of my automation efforts. EDUCATION I have attended some graduate level courses as well as numerous technical training seminars. I am currently enrolled in the Transportation officers advanced course and a class on programming in the "C" language. I worked my way through college in 5 years and was placed on the honor roll twice despite maintaining a 20 to 30 hour workweek. -- Bachelor of Engineering Technology, Operations option, from the University of Central Florida in 1981 -- Associate of Arts in Pre-engineering with heavy emphasis on programming languages from Brevard Community College in 1978. PERSONAL I have been married seven years and have one son, age four. I do not smoke and am in excellent health (5'7" and 155 lbs). My outside interests range from Earth Sheltered Housing to small aircraft. I have been an officer in the Local DECUS users group for six years and am currently a member of the National Space Society.
